The Conjurors Series

SF Canada member Jane Glatt is pleased to announce that the second book in The Conjurors series, The Shaman’s Son, will release on June 30th. The first book, The Bookbinder’s Daughter, came out at the end of January. The series is published by Tyche Books.

The Bookbinder’s Daughter (The Conjurers Book 1)

Faelin Keetley has kept secrets all her life: she can read, a skill that none but the Conjurers are allowed. And she has taken over bookbinding jobs from her father, when women on the Bridge are forbidden professions.

Her father’s death leaves Faelin with even more dangerous secrets. His last words were a spell, and all his life he’s been hiding a room full of hundreds of spellbooks.

Worse, his death leaves her to the mercies of the Conjurers and the traditions of the Bridge. Denied her livelihood and facing an arranged marriage or death, Fae takes an ancient family journal and escapes, determined to build a new life for herself.

But Fae’s secrets are catching up with her, and the Conjurers will do anything to discover them.

The Shaman’s Son (The Conjurers Book 2)

Aric Rawlings is the first man of the Riverman village in generations to inherit Shaman powers. Still trying to control his new gifts, Aric and his lover, Faelin, a true Conjurer, must work together to combat their new enemy, Burrage, another true Conjurer.

Burrage has the spell and the ability to complete the curse placed on the Rivermen. With the people of the Bridge turned against them, Aric and Faelin will have to save themselves and protect the Rivermen . . . no matter the cost to Aric.

Both titles are (or will be) available in print and ebook; find buying links on Jane’s site.

9 Tales of Raffalon – Matthew Hughes

SFC member Matthew Hughes is offering his collection, 9 Tales of Raffalon, in a multiformat ebook for just .99US for a limited time.

In an age of wizards and walled cities, Raffalon is a journeyman member of the Ancient and Honorable Guild of Purloiners and Purveyors. In other words, a thief.

His skills allow him to scale walls, tickle locks, defeat magical wards. He lifts treasures and trinkets, and spends the proceeds on ale and sausages in taverns where a wise thief sits with his back to the wall.

But somehow things often go the way they shouldn’t and then Raffalon has to rely upon his wits and a well calibrated sense of daring.

Here are nine tales that take our enterprising thief into the Underworld and Overworld, and pit him against prideful thaumaturges, grasping magnates, crooked guild masters, ghosts, spies, ogres, and a talented amateur assassin.

The collection includes seven novelettes that first appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, plus “Inn of the Seven Blessings,” from the bestselling anthology, ROGUES, and “Sternutative Sortilege,” which appears only in this collection.

Find out more and grab your copy in the Bookstore at Matthew’s website, www.matthewhughes.org.

“Arrivals” from JM Frey

SFC member J.M. Frey has launched a new novella, the second in her Accidental Turn series.

After seventeen years of adventuring, Bevel Dom and Kintyre Turn are finally returning home.

Forsyth Turn—brother to Bevel’s long-time questing partner and newly Paired lover—has left both Hain and a hell of a lot of responsibility behind. He’s bequeathed the Shadow’s Mask and position of the king’s spymaster to Bevel, and the seat of Lysse Chipping to Kintyre. It’s a lot to take on, and it will mean an end to questing forever if they do.

But it might also mean a chance for Bevel and Kintyre to find a Happily Ever After of their own.

Unfortunately, Turn Hall seems to be infested with eligible young maidens out to snatch away the freshly returned Lord of Lysse, determined to destroy the fragile happiness that Bevel has built. Faced with more decisions than he was prepared for, Bevel battles with foes unfamiliar, making him wonder if life on the road really wasn’t all that bad.

But if there’s one thing Bevel Dom isn’t afraid to do, it’s fight for the man he loves.

An Accidental Turn novella set between The Untold Tale and The Forgotten Tale, Arrivals follows Kintyre Turn and Bevel Dom as they step into Forsyth’s vacated life and face the surprising responsibilities he’s left in his wake. Arrivals is available on AMAZON or SMASHWORDS.

Not sure you’re all caught up on the series? Check out the suggested reading order here, and you can pick up a FREE copy of the first book in the series, THE UNTOLD TALE, by signing up for J.M.’s newsletter.

Archipelago

SFC member Charlotte Ashley has a new Patreon-enabled serial novel, Archipelago, in progress, in collaboration with authors Kurt Hunt and Andrew Leon Hudson.

“What is Archipelago? It’s a serial novel, and more. Every month, subscribers will get three episodes delivered to their inboxes, one from each of three nations. As the storylines interweave, the writers will start to compete – trying to outwit and out-write each other for dominance of the new world they’ve build.

But that isn’t all. Readers get a say too. Vote for the fates of your favourite factions, support your favourite ships, try to sink your enemies. Pick a side, read along, and help uncover the secrets of the Archipelago.

May’s stories are public, available to be read by all.  Starting in June, three Core Episodes a month will go out to subscribers.  For $1/month you can get all three storylines and the right to interfere in their plans. That’s 10,000-15,000 words a month of sea monsters, tall ships, powerful artifacts, and politics – you’ll love it!”

The Lady by K.V. Johansen Published

The Lady, by K.V. Johansen, was published December 9 by Pyr. According to Publishers Weekly:
The Lady by KV Johansen
“The action continues unabated in this dashing, magic-filled sequel to The Leopard… Deities, demons, devils, and wizards stalk the pages alongside human heroes and others not so easily defined. Some of the magic is as quick as thought, while other magic requires lengthy rituals that border on poetry. Johansen has found a winning combination: the modern epic fantasy penchant for a cast of thousands and the golden age feeling of a tale of Conan or Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser duelling with gods gone mad.”

The Leopard was chosen for Kirkus Review‘s
Best Speculative Fiction Reads for June, and io9.com’s Most Astounding Must-Read Science Fiction And Fantasy Books In June.

Ahjvar, the assassin known as the Leopard, wants only to die, to end the curse that binds him to a life of horror. Although he has no reason to trust the goddess Catairanach or her messenger Deyandara, fugitive heir to a murdered tribal queen, desperation leads him to accept her bargain: if he kills the mad prophet known as the Voice of Marakand, Catairanach will free him of his curse. Accompanying him on his mission is the one person he has let close to him in a lifetime of death, a runaway slave named Ghu. Ahj knows Ghu is far from the half-wit others think him, but in Marakand, the great city where the caravan roads of east and west meet, both will need to face the deepest secrets of their souls, if either is to survive the undying enemies who hunt them and find a way through the darkness that damns the Leopard.

To Marakand, too, come a Northron wanderer and her demon verrbjarn lover, carrying the obsidian sword Lakkariss, a weapon forged by the Old Great Gods to bring their justice to the seven devils who escaped the cold hells so long before.

Review: …the work highlights Johansen’s strengths. A surprising number of characters and plot threads are deftly interwoven…Publishers Weekly
